Dress Code
The MASD has instituted a NEW Dress Code for all students: Proper attire for dance class includes leotard, tights and the proper dance shoes at all times! Please see below for required dance attire all classes: - Ballet/Pointe: Pink ballet slippers, black leotard (any style), light pink tights, black ballet skirt may be worn. Any pink shoe for ballet is recommended and sold in the stores listed below. Drawstrings should be tied securely and tucked into shoe.
- Pre-Ballet: Light pink leotard, light pink tights, pink ballet slippers.
- Combo Classes: Dancers may wear their ballet apparel for the tap portion of the class as well.
- Modern: Black leotard (any style), footless tights in black or tan. Black jazz pants, capri stlye dance pants or dance shorts may be worn over footless tights.
- Jazz: Black leotard (any style), black or tan tights. Black jazz pants, capri style dance pants, or dancer shorts can be worn over black or tan tights.
- Jazz Shoe Requirements are as follows: Capezio EJ2 or CG05 - Black split sole, pull-on booty
- Tap: Black leotard (any style), black or tan tights, black skirt or black jazz pants, capri-style dance pants or dance shorts worn over black or tan tights. No athletic pants with stripes or sports logos.
- Tap Shoe Requirements are as follows:
► Kindergarten through Tap 4-5 - Capezio Tie Shoe in Black, Style # N-625 with Elastic. Ribbons not worn for weekly class!
► Tap 5 and Above Class Levels: Black oxford, Style # Capezio 442 or CG17 or Bloch 301 or 388 (this model is split sole and preferred by advanced students.)
Please note: Inexpensive Tap Shoes have cheap alloy taps instead of metal. It is very difficult to produce good sound with these shoes. I have observed frustration in the dancers, because no matter their effort or ability, the tap sounds are poor and inaudible. Better quality shoes will produce better quality tapping! - Boys: Solid Black or White t-shirts, black pants (athletic wear permitted for boys only!)
- Hair for all dance classes: Hair must be worn up and secured away from the face. Buns are required for Tuesday, 6:15 and 7:30 Ballet Classes and Wed. 6:15 Ballet. Headbands may be worn to secure short hair from the face.
- Leg warmers, dance sweaters, and dance warm-up gear may be worn for the beginning of class and then removed. Absolutely NO North Face Jackets, t-shirts, sweat shirts may be worn for class. We keep the MASD warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Additional layers of clothing are unnecessary and not permitted.
- Students who fail to come properly dressed for the classes will not be able to participate.
- No jewelry should be worn to class. No gum chewing, candy, etc
- No enforced dress code for Zumba, Pilates, and Yoga. Sturdy sneakers should be worn for Zumba classes.
As with all change, we expect to encounter some resistance. Dance is a discipline and requires a certain uniformity. Both parents and dancers will see that a dress code makes life easier and ultimately more economical. If last years shoes fit well, please continue to wear them. When new shoes are needed, you can purchase the required ones. Our goal is to have everyone in proper shoes for our January Performance. Please contact us with any questions you may have about our dress code. Dancewear and shoes should be purchased at the following stores:
