Class Descriptions

BALLET:  Students are trained in classical ballet with a strong emphasis on proper alignment, correct placement, and muscle memory. This allows the body to move to its full potential and helps to prevent injury. Students focus on expanding their ballet vocabulary, properly executing technique, improving musicality and increasing strength and flexibility.  As students progress through the ballet program, performance quality becomes a key focus.  Advanced dancers study variations from classic ballet repertoire such as "Swan Lake," "The Nutcracker," "Don Quixote," and most recently George Balanchine's iconic "Serenade."

MODERN:  Modern dance is a constantly evolving art form.  Students here are introduced to classical and contemporary techniques with an emphasis on alignment, rhythm, and power of expression.  Dancers are challenged and encouraged to explore improvisations and partner work, and to develop strength, coordination, musicality and flexibility.  These movement qualities are introduced in an imaginative and passionate way, while giving students ample opportunity for socialization and fun!

JAZZ/HIP-HOP:  Jazz technique focuses on exciting, dynamic expression and technical proficiency.  Students develop the skills to suspend, isolate, connect and explode in their movement.  Jazz dance celebrates originality with the emphasis on individual expression, as well as, supplying the technical tools needed for powerful performance.  Students will dance to contemporary and age appropriate music, while also learning solid dance technique and current dance trends in hip-hop, funk, classic broadway, and contemporary style dance.

TAP:  Tap dance is characterized by the movements and percussive sounds of the feet.  Tap can be practiced and performed to a wide variety of music from Broadway to contemporary.  The core of the technique rests in rhythm, syncopation, and creative phrasing.  Students musicality, coordination, and focus are emphasised in this energetic and enlivening dance form.
